| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The goal of this project is the systematic development and testing of navigation mechanisms in ants. The research strategy is designed to bring together the disciplines of computer science, robotics, neurobiology, and ethology. By building a real-world autonomous agent that mimic the mechanisms of navigation of ants, alternative biological hypotheses are to be tested in real-world environments and new hypotheses generated. As a result we expect a better understanding of navigation mechanisms in ants. Two navigational mechanisms of desert ants --- path integration using a polarized-light compass, and visual piloting --- have been successfully reproduced with the autonomous robots Sahabot-1 and Sahabot-2.
