| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The function of the heart and of the circulatory system are impaired after open heart surgery. Medication to prevent low cardiac output are given routinely to prevent further deterioration of the postoperative patients. Both medications, Dobutamine (Dobutrex®) and Milrinone (Corotrop®), are ideal in this situation. They have the same mode of action: an increase in the force of the myocardium and a dilation of the sytemic arteries. The two medications are from a different chemical group of substance and therefore there are minor differences in the reaction of the patient and in the side effects. This is the first study which compares directly the effect of Dobutamin versus Milrinone in the pediatric age group. The aim of the study is to identify the optimal postoperative therapy in infants and children after open heart surgery as well as to compare advantages and side effects of the two study medications. All consecutive patients from the age of 6 weeks up to a body weight of 35kgs who are operated for a congenital heart defect will be prospectiely enrolled in the study. The patients are devided into two groups, obtaining either Dobutamine or Milrinone on day one and two postoperative in a prospective, randomized and double blind trial. Clinical signs of low cardiac output and routine haemodynamic parameters are collected and compared. | ||
