Title / Titel The role of brain natriuretic peptide in patients with congenital heart disease
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Die Bedeutung von Brain Natriuretic Peptide bei Patienten mit angeborenen Herzfehlern
Summary / Zusammenfassung Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a polypeptide secreted by the ventricles of the human heart in response to stretching of myocytes.
The physiologic action of BNP include increase of natriuresis, decrease of systemic vascular resistance and central venous pressure, resulting in an increase of cardiac output.
Elevated levels of BNP are measured in adult and pediatric patients suffering from congestive heart failure. The aim of the study is to analyse the role of BNP in pediatric patients with different types of congenital heart defects. Therefore, we will perform data analysis of levels of BNP in patients with CHD before invasive procedures, i.e. cardiac surgery respectively cardiac catheter interventions performed in our institution. Subgroup analysis for different hemodynamics (volume vs. pressure overload of the ventricle) will be done.
