Completed research project

Title / Titel The dynamics of categorization: exploiting the autonomous agents paradigm
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The goal of this project is to apply the New AI (autonomous agent) approach to psychological modeling in the area of categorization. The focus during the current period has been (a) on bringing the methodology of autonomous agents closer together with empirical research in psychology, and (b) to increase the level of complexity of the previous series of experiments.
1. A systematic first exploration of applying the autonomous agent methodology to categorization has been performed. A PhD pertinent thesis (funded by this project) has been completed (Title: Embodied categorization by Christian Scheier).
2. Two case studies illustrating the methodology of joining empirical psychological research and the autonomous agent methodologies have been performed during this period: The "A not B" problem, and Logan's model for learning categorization behaviors.
3. A robot platform, the SAMURAI, with improved sensory-motor complexity has been developed and preliminary experiments have been made. SAMURAI has a 3 degrees-of-freedom (DOF) arm (with 1 DOF gripper), a 2 DOF vision system and a number of other sensors (infrared, collision, touch).
4. An international cooperation in which this project will be the coordinating partner is currently being set up.
