Title / Titel Importance of infectious diseases in free-ranging and captive wild felids of Brazil
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung There is still a great lack of information regarding the occurrence and importance of infections in wild felids in Brazil, even in endangered free-ranging felids. Information on the exposure of felids to potential infectious agents is an important prerequisite for conservationist projects.
Thus, it is the aim of the present study to conduct a survey for exposure to selected pathogens in Brazilian free-ranging and captive felids. The investigated agents include the feline leukemia virus (FeLV), feline and puma immunodeficiency viruses (FIV, PIV), feline calici (FCV), parvo (FPV), herpes (FHV-1), and corona viruses (FCoV), Anaplasma phagocytophila, Ehrlichia canis, Bartonella henselae, Theileria, and Cytauxzoon.
Our findings so far point to the presence of common domestic carnivore pathogens in wild felids in their natural home range and address the need of close monitoring of these infections throughout an integrative and multidisciplinary approach.
