| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Flow is a complex motivational phenomenon which leads to well-being and high performance in different life domains. However, motivational conditions of flow have not yet been completely elucidated. Especially goals are thought to act as an important condition of flow, though empirical research that tests this notion is still lacking. We experimentally examine goal characteristics that facilitate or hinder the experience of flow. Integrating research on the approach-avoidance and mastery-performance goal distinction (e.g., Elliot & McGregor, 2001) and research on flow experience (Csikszentmihalyi, 1975, 1990), we deduce that the relationship between mastery and performance goals and flow is mediated by task engagement and that the relationship between approach and avoidance goals and flow is mediated by anxiety. Additionally, we combine both goal dimensions (performance approach goals, performance avoidance goals, mastery approach goals and mastery avoidance goals; see Elliot & McGregor, 2001) and test how they interact in the prediction of flow.
