Title / Titel The Motive–Incentive Fit in Sports
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Motivation is an interaction between a person’s motives and the incentives of a situation (McClelland, 1985). For example, an individual with a high achievement motive is “incited” by situations characterized by achievement incentives but not by situations without achievement incentives or by situations characterized by other incentives (e.g., affiliation incentives). Vice versa, an individual with a high affiliation motive is only “incited” by situations characterized by affiliation incentives. In the present research, we hypothesize that the goodness of motive-incentive fit predicts flow experience, which is defined as an optimal state of motivation. A series of correlational and experimental studies in the domain of sport shows that individuals whose motives fit to the incentives of the sport situation reported more flow than individuals whose motives did not fit to the sport incentives. The results are discussed in terms of the broader concept of a person x environment fit in sports.
