Completed research project

Title / Titel Ocular motor plasticy following vestibular tone asymmetry in humans
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The overall goal of this project is to better understand the role of the oculomotor neural integrator in processing vestibular information driving the vestibuloocular reflex. Alexander’s law represents a modification of those NIs that can be observed during spontaneous nystagmus due to UVD or vestibular stimulation/inhibition. In case of peripheral vestibular nystagmus it has only been investigated for the horizontal nystagmus components. It is unclear whether the vertical and torsional components of nystagmus also exhibit AL, to what extend they are affected and whether these components are coordinated to optimally serve the needs of the visual system. It is still a matter of debate whether AL is an adaptive process to overcome visual disturbances due to vestibular nystagmus or an intrinsic property of the oculomotor control system. Since AL is due to changes in NI function it gives us the unique opportunity to assess neural processing of vestibular signals by the NI. We aim to give the first complete three-dimensional description of AL and to derive a cybernetic model of the 3-D neural integrator network.
