Original title / Originaltitel Empirische Untersuchung zum Zusammenhang zwischen der Konzentration von Ethylglucuronid in den Haaren und Selbstauskünften zum Alkoholkonsum
Summary / Zusammenfassung Testing the driving ability for re-granting the driving licence is a major task of the department of traffic medicine of our institute. These examinations are required by the driving licence authorities in cases of driving under influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Nowadays we check for alcohol consumption and teetotalism, respectively, by analyses of ethyl glucuronide (EtG) in a hair sample. Actually only few data are available for the relation between the EtG-concentration in human hair and the amount of alcohol consumed. To interpret EtG-concentrations found in hair samples we currently use a cut-off value of 7 pg/mg and a threshold value differentiating between social drinkers and excessive alcohol consumption of 30 pg/mg.
Self-declared alcohol consumption data were registered in a questionnaire during a face-to-face interview. The EtG-concentrations in the collected hair samples were analyzed by GC-NCI/MS after cleaning by SPE and derivatization with PFPA. To standardize, generally only the proximal 2 cm (0-2 cm) of hair were investigated. The amount of hair used for analysis ranged from 15 to 25 mg.
