Title / Titel Neonatal Pulse Oximetry Screening for Congenital Heart Defects in Switzerland:
Range of Pathology in Screening-Positive Individuals
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung In Switzerland, there is a recommandation from the Swiss Society for Paediatric Cardiology and the
Swiss Society for Neonatology to screen all neonates for congenital heart defects within the first day of life by means of pulse oximetry (PO). The screening has been introduced in Switzerland in 2005. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the benefit of a nationwide PO screening and to define the positive predictive value of PO screening, i.e. to define the proportion of patients with positive test results who are correctly diagnosed as having a moderate or severe congenital heart defect. All neonates with a positive PO screening are reported by the responsible paediatric cardiologist to the study office. The detected congenital heart defects are listed and an attempt is made to estimate the individual benefit of an early recognition of each specific
