| Summary / Zusammenfassung | A growing body of research has indicated substantial positive long-term health effects of being engaged in a satisfactory and balanced close relationship. From the perspective of equity theory relational satisfaction is given when there is a perceived similar distribution of benefits and contributions among both spouses within their relationship. Accordingly, a disruption of this balance-principle could result if spouses differ in the extent of their efforts regarding a wide variety of shared issues, such as keeping the household, providing financial security, investing in emotional way etc. Similar, a discrepancy in personal matters such as having a higher educational level, a more pleasant appeal, etc., could have the same equity-disturbing impact. Even though the equity theory has a long tradition, no attention has been given to it's underlying physiologic pathways. Based on empirical evidence there is reason to believe, that there could be distinctive gender-specific effects in the degree of inequity-caused perceived distress, probably driven partly by steroids. The primary focus of the present study is to gain a better understanding of these mechanisms. Among eighty heterosexual couples the impact of inequity on physiological variables and interaction quality will be studied. Biological parameters will be repeatedly measured in saliva and individual and dyadic characteristics will be considered as possible moderating variables. |
