Current research project

Title / Titel International Normal Aging and Plasticity Imaging Center (INAPIC)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The goal of this project is an international research center located at The University of Zurich to examine the processes underlying behavioral plasticity across the lifespan, in particular old age. The center would use functional and structural MRI to examine plasticity, adhere to the highest scientific quality standards through reviewing projects by an expert review board, cooperate internationally with research groups focusing on plasticity in normal aging, and attract young researchers in the field. The requested funds would allow the investment in scanner infrastructure and technical support for a 3-Tesla scanner, thus guaranteeing 1500 measurement hours per year for five years at a central location. Because most available scanners are devoted to clinical research, this investment in normal aging research would overcome a structural bottleneck for translating original and creative research ideas into high quality normal aging research. By providing easy access to the scanner technology, local and international research groups could focus their effort and time on paradigm development, data analysis, publication, training, and grant development.
The center is unique in Europe in combining the support of long-term longitudinal plasticity and aging research through a planning horizon of several years, the focus on potentials of normal development, the provision of technical assistance and support to reduce the time of research groups to familiarize with the available technical equipment, an expert review board including neuropsychologist (Jäncke), gerontologist (Martin), bioimaging expert (Bösiger), dementia specialist (Hock), two medical imaging specialists, experts from NIH/NIMH/NIA and European research agency (latter four persons to be determined), and an international exchange component hosted at the Center of Gerontology at The University of Zurich. A cooperation and exchange with other imaging centers will be established.
The Center of Gerontology will coordinate the acquisition, conceptualization, actual testing, data analyses, documentation, and publication of research findings from local and international research groups. The core project of the center will be longterm longitudinal research on the amount of plasticity across old age that can be achieved through intensive trainings of cognitive, musical, social and motor abilities. The effects will be tested by analyzing physiological changes through imaging structural and functional changes in the brain. An emphasis will be on changes that are potentially protective for dementia.
