Title / Titel Role of epithelial adhesion molecules in the endotoxin-, acid- and hypoxia-induced lung injury
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Adhesion molecules play an important role in the recruitment of leukocytes to sites of tissue injury. The adhesive interactions between leukocytes and endothelial cells, mediated by adhesion molecules, have been studied intensively during the past years. The mechanisms of leukocyte-epithelial adhesion however are still unknown. The purpose of the present proposal is therefore to examine the mechanism and the pathogenic significance of the altered adhesion molecule expression in the respiratory tract of rat lung in various pulmonary injury processes, focusing primarily on epithelial cells in the respiratory compartment. In addition, the functional role of adhesion molecules on respiratory epithelial cells will be explored in human lung injury.
