Title / Titel Stereotype Threat in Personnel Selection
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung We investigated the impact of stereotype threat on gender-related performance differences in computer-simulated complex problem-solving scenarios (microworlds) as are used in employment testing. Study 1 confirmed that a stereotype positing lower microworld performance of women exists. In Study 2, describing a microworld as a selection task diagnostic for managerial performance selectively decreased female participants’ performance. Study 3 investigated gender differences in a microworld task and in a verbal task in a real-world high-stakes assessment center (AC) for managerial selection. Multilevel modeling revealed that – consistent with stereotype threat theory - female applicants’ microworld performance, but not verbal task performance, was influenced by the number of surrounding females present during testing. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
