Title / Titel Respiratory Muscle endurance test in healthy children
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Background: RMET has been shown to increase endurance performance in healthy subjects and patients with different neurological diseases such as spinal cord injury and myasthenia gravis. In adult COPD patients RMET resulted in increased inspiratory muscle strength and endurance, improvement of outcomes of exercise capacity and on measures of quality of life, and decreased dyspnea. Two studies have been performed so far in patients with cystic fibrosis. We have shown that respiratory muscle endurance can be improved by eight weeks of RMET.
No data is available for normal values of respiratory muscle endurance in school children

Aims: To investigate respiratory muscle endurance in healthy school children aged 10-12 years.

Methods: healthy school children aged between 10-12years will be tested for respiratory muscle endurance using a specific training device (SpioTiger).
Lung function will be assessed in all children and a questionnaire regarding physical activity and helath will be filled in. In addition a modified 6 minute walking/running test will be performed in al children at a second visit.
