| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Eating disorders are a phenomenon which produced high research output. However, most studies on eating behavior or eating disorders apply to young women. There has been only little eating-related research in older women (about 40 years or older). Therefore we will investigate eating behavior in middle-aged women and whether this group of women suffers from eating disorders. Studying older women, menopause has to be considered. Clinically, menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation due to loss of ovarian follicular function. One of its accompanying aspects is weight gain. This phenomenon may cause self-esteem problems and may lead to restrictive eating and, eventually, an eating disorder. For these reasons we are interested in the following questions: 1) How many middle-aged women suffer from eating disorders? 2) Is there a possible correlation between eating disorders and menopause? 3) What is the correlation between eating disorders and general mental health in middle-aged women. |
