Title / Titel	Pilot study investigating the efficacy and safety of Alitretinoin in patients suffering from severe mucosal lichen planus.

Summary / Zusammenfassung	Objectives: Primary: Efficacy of alitretinoin in reducing signs and symptoms of severe lichen planus with mucosal manifestations, which does not respond to standard topical therapy with potent steroids Secondary: Efficacy of alitretinoin over time in reduction of signs (e.g. ulcerations) or symptoms (e.g. pruritus) Time to response; Reduction of inflammatory infiltrate before and during alitretinoin therapy determined by histopathology taken before and 4 weeks after initiation of study treatment. Relapse rate Safety of alitretinoin in mucosal lichen planus Study Rationale: Conventional retinoids are listed in evidenced based treatment recommendations for lichen planus (Ormerod et al.British Association of Dermatologists guidelines on the efficacy and use of acitretin in dermatology. BJD 2010; 162:952-63). Alitretinoin has shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and less mucocutanous side effects, which could favorably impact this disease and the compliance with the medication. Alitretinoin was not yet systematically investigated in mucosal lichen planus.
