| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Menstrual cycle characteristics, such as regularity and cycle lengths, indicate the cumulative exposure to ovarian steroids. While irregular menstruations are often associated with anovulatory cycles and therefore reduced production of estrogen and progesterone, shorter and regular cycles have been linked to increased cumulative exposure to ovarian steroids. Sex hormone steroids have an impact on the development of various chronic diseases and are known to modulate neurotransmitter systems associated with psychiatric disorders. Menstrual cycle characteristics are likely to be influenced by a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors affecting the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian-axis. Numerous studies have identified epidemiological and behavioral factors associated with certain patterns of menstrual functioning, which eventually lead to menstrual cycle disorders. However, little attention has been given to psychological correlates of menstrual cycle characteristics so far. In this study, we set out to examine which psychological factors may have an impact on menstrual cycle characteristics and whether or why some women are more vulnerable to developing menstrual cycle disorders. Furthermore, we aim to get a better understanding of the correlation between menstrual cycle characteristics and general mental health in premenopausal women. |
