Summary / Zusammenfassung	Viral diagnostic procedures are improved e.g. by PCR technologies. Thereby sensitivity and specificity, but also speed for the diagnosis are improved. We set up a test for pox viruses for the World Economic Forum in the case of bioterrorism. New PCR tests for viruses comprise CMV, Noro, and Influenza H5N1. Other virus PCR assays are under investigation. A recent Noro outbreak has shown that our assay was very useful, since it was the only one available in Switzerland. The Institute of Medical Virology (IMV) has become a Regional Laboratory for Bioterrorism by viruses, which is a heavy burden. The Diagnostic Unit is accredited since five years and got a renewal in 2005 till 2010.
