Summary / Zusammenfassung	Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is a pathogen in horse populations throughout the world with a high prevalence, which causes major losses to the horse breeding business. Venereal transmission of herpesvirus in cattle is well documented. Infection of mares by artificial insemination or natural cover by an EHV-1 shedding stallion is not documented until now. With our preliminary results of virus shedding in semen during acute EHV-1 infection, venereal infection of mares by shedding stallions needs to be considered as possible mode for EHV-1 spreading. Further investigations are initiated to elucidate if breeding may expose mares to a risk of acute EHV-1 infection.
