Summary / Zusammenfassung	The aim of discussion of the german-swiss study group ˘ consisting of scholars and postgraduate students of the universities of ZŸrich, Konstanz and Basel ˘ is twofold: 1) inhowfar the western influences on the towns and cities of the western part of orthodox Europe may be understood by criteria of a process of "modernizationÓ during modern times as well as during the late middle ages; 2) inhowfar the western parts of orthodox Europe, which were influenced by such connections, in the course of history did assume specific traits of a transition zone between east/southeast and west. Two symposia took place on June 13, 1998 at the university of ZŸrich, and on October 30, 1999 at the university of Konstanz. A third symposium will be organized in 2000.
