| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The studies of this project ˘ covering most of the east european countries ˘ analyze the political and economic situation during the last years of communist government as the conditions of the collapse of communist power and the stages and problems of transformation since 1990 as well. Finally, success or failure of the political and economic transformation are discussed in connection with several aspects of the specific heritage of history. The basic result of the study group is, that contries situated within the latin part of Europe (East Central Europe) are in a better position of successfull transformation than countries of the orthodox part of Europe like East and Southeast Europe. The main reason of this different development is 1) that East central Europe already since the late middle ages showed closer connections with the economically more developed center of Central and Western Europe, and 2) that in contrast with the orthodox world within latin Europe state and society more and more took separate ways, which made possible the growing up of a civil society as a basic precondition of a democratization. |
