| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease of horses in the northern hemisphere. Beside environmental changes it is often necessary to administer drugs to horses with COPD for a limited time. Oral corticosteroids are often used in the therapy of COPD. Recently, administration of corticosteroids by inhalation has been described in horses. This allows the application of the drug in a high concentration at the effector sites. Also the corticosteroid-related side effects are minimized. The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of inhalation therapy with budesonide to oral therapy with prednisolone in horses with COPD and to evaluate the effect on the endogenous cortisol production by repeated measurement of plasmacortisol during therapy. | ||||||
