Title / Titel Glomerulonephritis and Borreliosis in Bernese Mountain Dogs in Switzerland
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Glomerulonephritis und Borreliose beim Berner Sennenhund in der Schweiz
Summary / Zusammenfassung Glomerulonephritis appears to be more common in Bernese Mountain Dogs. In an earlier study of Bernese Mountain Dogs with glomerulonephritis an increased number of dogs with positive antibody titers against Borrelia burgdorferi were found. Results from our clinic show that in healthy Bernese Mountain Dogs antibodies against B. burgdorferi were more often present compared to other healthy dogs, but proteinuria as a marker of glomerular disease was not found more often in Bernese Mountain Dogs compared to these other dogs. However Bernese Mountain Dogs are overrepresented amongst dogs with glomerular disease. To evaluate if antibodies against B. burgdorferi favor the development of glomerular disease, follow up evaluations of Bernese Mountain Dogs with and without such antibodies will be performed.
