Title / Titel Mathematical learning environments in Swiss German secondary schools - investigating teachers' and students' perspectives

Summary / Zusammenfassung As a national supplement to TIMSS (Third International Mathematics and Science Study) lower (N=1090) and final-year (N=506) secondary-school students as well as their mathematics teachers were administered a questionnaire aimed at capturing pedagogical features of mathematical learning environments (e.g. organization and time management, teaching-learning patterns, steps of scaffolding knowledge construction, social settings, facilities for articulation, reflection and exploration of mathematical content, forms and standards for measuring achievement). Data is currently being processed with respect to four main questions:

1. How to lower compared to final-year secondary-school teachers create mathematical learning environments? How traditional versus progressive is mathematics teaching in Swiss German secondary schools?

2. How to lower compared to final-year secondary-school students perceive mathematics teaching? Are there any differences related to type of school, gender or mathematics achievement?

3. How do teachers' descriptions correspond with students' perceptions?

4. Do certain learning environments have a better impact on students' mathematics achievement than others?
