Title / Titel The sense in not being sensible: Flow experience and well being as motivation for autotelic activities
An investigation of the example of rock climbing using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Der Sinn des Unsinns: Flow-Erleben und Wohlbefinden als Anreiz für autotelische Tätigkeiten.
Eine Untersuchung mit der Experience Sampling Method (ESM) am Beispiel des Felskletterns
Summary / Zusammenfassung The project addresses open questions regarding flow theory by Csikszentmihalyi (1975). Sport climbers (35 in total, 21 men and 14 women) were studied while rock climbing (two days) and also in daily work life (four days) using the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). Emotional well being and experience of the activity during rock climbing (as representative of an activity with a strongly autotelic character) prove to be of extremely high quality and, in particular, intensity, both in comparison to other climbing activities and in contrast to daily activities at work. The study reveals that direct and therefore distortion-free investigation of a paradigmatic flow experience, of which rock climbing seems to be an example, produces valuable information for our understanding of the quality of optimal experience. (This study is part of the project "Quality of experience in everyday life".)
