Title / Titel The Sociophysiology of the Pair Bond in Common Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Under captive conditions, common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) exhibit a socially monogamous lifestyle. In the present study, a series of different experiments was conducted to investigate the pair bond in this species. Behavioural and cardiophysiological responses to social disturbances were measured; at the same time ovarian cycles of the females were monitored. Behavioural data were recorded with a miniaturised remote-controlled video camera installed within each cage. Cardiophysiological data (systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heartbeat rate) as well as locomotor activity were recorded telemetrically through peritoneally implanted transmitters. The study showed that a pair bond between pairmates of common marmosets exists: (1) Individuals showed signs of arousal when separated from the pairmate. (2) The arousal measured while in an unfamiliar environment is only reduced by being together with the pairmate, and not by being together with an opposite-sexed stranger. (3) Affiliative behaviours were only observed within established pairs and aggressive behaviours occurred only between strange animals. (4) Mounts during confrontation of an individual in the visual presence of its pairmate with an opposite-sexed stranger occurred only half as often as when the pairmate was visually absent.
