Title / Titel Patient Satisfaction: Effects of Physician Gender and Physician Communication Style
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung This study investigates how physicians’ communication style in combination with physician gender affects patient satisfaction. We focus on two dimensions of the physician-patient communication: dominance (no sharing of power, no sharing of information with the patient) and emotionality (empathy and taking the patient’s perspective). In real life interactions, physician gender and physician communication style are confounded variables (female doctors tend to show more emotionality and male doctors tend to show more dominance). This is the reason why in the present study, potential patients interact with a computer simulated physician who is either male or female and who has either a dominant or an emotional communication style. The computer simulation enables us to vary physician gender and physician communication style independent of each other while holding constant almost everything else in the interaction. After the interaction, patients report how satisfied they were with the consultation. We expect that physician gender will affect how satisfied patients were with either the dominant or the emotional communication style of the physician.
