| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The aim of the second stage of the project is to study the ‘social pedagogic’ approach in relation to the quality of life and the life chances of looked-after children in Denmark, France and Germany. At the first stage of the project national case studies were carried out in Belgium, France, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. These case studies provided an overview within each country of the development of residential child care and sited these within national and local social and policy contexts. It described the training and qualification of staff, especially as these related to the daily practice of staff in their interaction with children. The main focus was on the ‘social pedagogy’ approach. Backround The British Government’s objective for looked after children is to "ensure that children looked after gain maximum life chance benefits from educational opportunities, health care and social care”. These standards and objectives provide the policy context for this research. The work of staff engaged in children’s residential establishments, and especially their relationships and interactions with children is central to meeting such objectives. Many British studies show that the life chances of looked after children in the UK are poor. This is the reason, why the concepts of social pedagogy (and equivalent terms, such as éducation) in continental Europe have addressed what is a dominant concern for the UK: namely, the professionalisation and training of the workforce. |
