| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Although positive effects of peer collaboration may be expected based on research, and in fact have been confirmed by many empirical studies, it is also clear that the outcome of collaborative learning depends heavily on a careful design of the learning environment. Specifically, many students need some help and support in order to engage in fruitful collaboration with peers, as well as in order to engage in mature processes of understanding and problem-solving in the particular subject matter at hand. The enrichment of learning environments with computer-based tools offers promising possibilities to support and facilitate collaborative learning. HERON-WATGRAF, an educational software for mathematics learning and teaching, was developed in order to facilitate the understanding and solving of mathematical word problems in collaborative learning situations by means of two support functions. It provides subjects (1) with appropriate support for constructive, task-related communication and collaboration, and (2) with task-related support for understanding and problem solving. In order to investigate the effectiveness of HERON in a process-oriented way, the software was implemented in two fifth-grade classrooms. A microanalysis of the videotaped dialogues of four student pairs provides evidence of quantitative and qualitative changes in the conversation, related to both the communicative and the task-related aspect of peer collaboration. The outcome of this evaluation is serving as the starting point for an empirical study focussing on the effects of using HERON-WATGRAF in an extended learning environment. | ||||||
