| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The concept of learning motivation has been studied from several perspectives. One perspective which has been proven especially useful over the past 15 years is the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985). There are only few studies dealing with learning motivation under the perspective of the self-determination theory in the German speaking part of Europe. One reason may be the absence of satisfactory research instruments. The main purpose of the project is to develop a standardized German instrument to measure the different motivational orientations proposed by Deci and Ryan. In a first explorative study students of grade levels 5, 8 and 11 were asked to report in an open format for various subject areas why they engage in school-related learning. Based on the self-determination theory students were categorized into groups of different motivational orientation. Significant relationships between motivational orientation, interests, and control beliefs provide evidence for the self-determination theory. A next study is planned for summer 1999. |
