Title / Titel The palecology of the South African australopithecines
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Die Palökologie der südafrikanischen Australopithecinen
Summary / Zusammenfassung The main work consists in the excavation of the Plio/Pleistocene cave of Gladysvale and the reconstruction of the natural environment of the South African australopithecines. This has important implication on the origin of hominid bipedalism, a major characteristic for the evolution of the human lineage. Main objects of the research project are:

• Construction of a three-dimensional model of the Gladysvale cave system as a basic framework for the reconstruction of the sedimentological history of the cave deposits.

• Collection and description of faunal remains for the reconstruction of the ecological niche of Australopithecus africanus.

• Construction of a chronological framework (faunal and absolute dating) for the interpretation of the more complex classical cave sites in the Transvaal.
