Title / Titel Personality and Vocational Continuity
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Persönlichkeit und berufliche Kontinuität
Summary / Zusammenfassung The modern dynamics of the work world have created ever-heavier demands for career flexibility, which in recent decades has led, among other things, to an increase in career changes. Does this mean - from a psychological perspective as well - that career paths today are characterized primarily by discontinuity and breaks that are determined by external employment conditions and therefore "forced upon the person from the outside"? This issue will be examined using data from the Zurich Longitudinal Study "From School to Middle Adulthood" (see Project: "Vocational development from age 15 to 35"). The question of continuity versus discontinuity of the career path will be conceptualized at two levels. At the first level, career paths themselves will be investigated. The central question is how continuity and discontinuity of career paths appear when viewed from the perspective of a psychological classification of occupations (J.L. Holland's theory of work environments). At the second level, connections will be drawn between the various types of career paths found and personality characteristics that were assessed during the course of adolescence. We will be interested mainly in examining the degree to which personality characteristics predict different types of career paths, or in other words, whether despite possible discontinuities at the first level there may be a kind of personality-determined continuity.
