| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Tolerability, safety, compliance and efficacy of a 3-day course of azithromycin given once-a-day will be compared with a 10-day course of the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid given twice-a-day in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) managed as outpatients. Children aged 1 month to 16 years will be randomized to the antimicrobial treatment after decision of outpatient management of the radiologically confirmed CAP has been taken by the caring physician and informed consent from the patient or caregivers has been gathered. Moreover, a novel real-time polymerase chain assay to quantify bacterial pathogens important as etiologic agents in CAP including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis in nasopharyngeal secretions and serum obtained at inclusion will be evaluated as a rapid diagnostic tool. Finally, the intra-familial epidemiology of Mycoplasma pneumoniae will be investigated. | ||||||
