Title / Titel Measuring the effect of cartelization in medicine
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Medical associations can be viewed as cartels with a dual purpose. First, they seek to limit access to the market for medical services in order to keep demand for their members at a high level. Second, even if an increase in physician density cannot be avoided, they can still try to insulate members' incomes from this development, e.g. through product differentiation. The more powerful a medical association, the more success it should have in both endeavors. Using indicators of power in six industrial countries, partial rankings of predicted effects can be derived. Countries with rather weak associations tend to feature a marked increase in physician density, and this increase also translates into a reduction of relative medical incomes. However, the United States poses a puzzle in that relative medical incomes have increased in the face of a surge of (predicted) physician density.
