| Summary / Zusammenfassung | In 1906, Willy Leuzinger started screening films in Rapperswil, a minor town near Lake Zurich. He subsequently opened a cinema (today one of the oldest Swiss cinemas still in existence, run by Leuzinger's grand-daughter). In the twenties he was a small-scale entrepreneur with a wide range of activities, running the cinema in Rapperswil and two itinerant cinemas which operated in Central and Eastern Switzerland, playing at fairs and in villages. He produced, in a semiprofessional manner, short films of local public events, to be screened in his stable and itinerant cinemas. Of these, about 70 titles (dating from 1922 until 1928) have survived in the original 35mm nitrate positive copies. The project is devided in two parts. I Pragmatics: Restoration and Catalogue of the Production Leuzinger II Research: a. The enterprise Leuzinger as an important case study for the history of the institution of cinema in non-urban Switzerland. b. The production Leuzinger as a production typical of a country without an established film industry. c. A study of the films and their esthetic in the context of actual research on early non-fictionfilm. |
