Title / Titel Are Langerhans cells implicated in transport of PrpSC from periphery to lymphoid organs?
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Langerhans cells belong to the so called professional antigen presenting cells (APCs) of the immune system. They are phagocytic dendritic cells found in the epidermis of the skin. They can migrate from the epidermis to the regional lymph nodes via the different lymphatics. In the lymph node the differentiate into dendritic cells. There is an open debate, if dendritc cells indeed play a role in the transport and accumulation of PrpSc. To exclusively investigate the role of Langerhans cells in prion pathogenesis we will carry out epidermal and peripheral inoculations using transgenic mice which specifically lack Langerhans cells (Id-2 knockout mice).
