Completed research project

Title / Titel Explorations in Embodied Cognition
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung The long-term goal of this project is to employ a synthetic methodology - i.e. a methodology of "understanding by building" - to aquire a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the emergence of cognition. Towards this goal we have been performing experiments with robots, recorded the sensory-motor and internal states, and analyzed the time-series data. One of the essential results has been that through sensory-motor coordination - in contrast to non-sensory-motor coordinate tasks - sensory data are actively included, leading to a reduction in the complexity. This way, learning, in particular the formation of cross-modal associations is significantly simplified. By having a robot interacting with its physical and social environment over extended periods of time, we will attempt initiate a developmental process from which basic cognitive abilities should emerge. The required robot hardware for initial experiments has been developed. Extensions (e.g. haptic sensors) should also be investigated.
