Summary / Zusammenfassung: The cultural transfer from Greece to Rome, better known as ’Hellenisation’, has long been in the centre of scientific research, as shown by numerous publications regarding the ’Hellenisation’ of Rome, Campania and other parts of the Italian peninsula. Additionally various, also recent, studies have been directed to the ’Hellenisation’ of Greek East and Asia Minor and to the subsequent ’Romanisation’ of certain areas.

Until now however, only little interest has been shown towards Greece in Roman times and especially to the consequences of the arrival of an expansionist Roman power in the region (2nd cent. B.C. to 1st cent. A.D). A number of isolated studies on the Roman presence in Greece do exist; however, the phenomenon of acculturation occuring as multiple parallel processes at different levels only starts being considered. The present project will implement an interdisciplinary approach to this complex and little explored field (classical archaeology, ancient history and epigraphy, philology, cultural anthropology).

The project aims to develop an outline of the various realities and processes into which differing attitudes of Greek cities to the Roman presence can be incorporated. The different conventions and arrangements made as part of this coexistence will be analysed with respect to their cultural effects on the Greek and Roman societies. Two points will be of particular interest: firstly the extent to and the means by which the Roman presence penetrated existing structures (Erinnerungsräume within cities and sanctuaries) or changed them for their own needs and secondly to what extent new values and conceptions of identity find expression in the archaeological record (grave and votive reliefs).
