| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The present debate about European integration makes it plain that the notion of identity has achieved paramount importance: A common European identity is widely held to be an essential prerequisite for the EU to become a post-national democratic polity. Unfortunately, the term identity is used in this discourse not only widely but also loosely. The primary aim of my research is thus to gain a thorough understanding of identity, be it individual or collective. The resulting conception of identity shall then be linked to political institutions, namely to the liberal idea of property rights. In doing so, the need for a causal linkage between identities and institutions will be examined. As a result, the widespread assumption about the need for the logical and temporal pre-existence of European identity will likely be challenged. My research thesis suggests an alternative approach to both the emergence and the pattern of European identity. | ||||
