Motive-goal congruence: The influence of a cognitive focus on specific emotions
Summary / Zusammenfassung
The (in)congruence between motives and goals is an actual research topic in motivational psychology. Several studies demonstrate the deleterious effects of incongruence between motives and goals on well-being. Based on McClelland’s (1985) theory about emotions as the core of implicit motives we assume that a conscious focus on these specific emotions during goal setting can activate the implicit motive system. This system then steers the choice of goals and the commitment to these goals towards enhanced motive congruence. This hypothesis is tested in a serial of experimental studies.
