Title / Titel Motivation and Volition in Sports
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Motivational and volitional processes play a mayor role in sports-performance. Assuming that participation in a marathon-race have a lot in common with other goal-striving processes, constructs of goal-striving research have been transferred into the field of sports. Three studies were conducted with marathon- runners.

Two studies analyzed motivational and volitional processes during a marathon-race and identified a crisis in goal striving at about kilometre 30 that was negatively correlated with race performance (Schüler, 2004). A third study demonstrated that a self-regulatory strategy (use of self-verbalizations), could buffer the negative effects of goal striving-crisis on race-performance (Schüler & Langens, in prep.). All three studies found a typical course of motivational and volitional changes. A further study is planned to test whether these changes have physiological correlates (cortisol).
