Central Tumor Bank für Children’s Malignant Tumors of the Swiss Pediatric Oncology Group (SPOG)
Summary / Zusammenfassung
The aim of the SPOG Central Tumor Bank for Children’s Malignant Tumors is to create a basis for research into the molecular, genetic, immunological and other characteristic features of children’s tumors. This goal will be achieved through: (1) the central conservation of tumor tissue samples from as many children’s malignant neoplasias as possible, for later molecular genetic analysis; (2) the establishing, characterization and cryo-living conservation of primary cell cultures from children’s malignant tumors and derived permanent cell lines, (3) the documentation of the conserved material and the original tumor on data sheets; (4) the distribution of the conserved material, as well as the tumor-derived material, for experimental studies by children’s oncological research groups associated with SPOG. The SPOG Central Tumor Bank for Children’s Malignant Tumors will make it possible to examine molecular genetic changes in children’s tumors from a large number of patients, to see whether they (1) represent relevant pathogenetic steps for the formation of the tumor or are secondary phenomenon; (2) have significance as diagnostic criteria; (3) possess prognostic relevance in multi-variable models and contribute to biologically established therapy stratification. The cell lines are also available for experimental investigation. For example, if the growth retardation potential of a chemical substance or the differentiating stimulus of a growth factor is investigated in a certain type of tumor, 5 or 10 cell cultures from various primary tumors with this tumor identity can be requested and used experimentally.
