| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Commonly, three sorts of lifestyle are recognized: 1. the active way of life (vita activa) 2. the contemplative way of life (vita contemplativa) 3. the voluptuous way of life (vita voluptuas). Aside from ethical questions in regard to the vita contemplativa, one may examine the specific characteristics of the phenomenon of the vita contemplativa. As its working hypothesis, the project will begin with the assumption that the common root of all forms of the vita contemplativa is pessimism. That is to say, all forms of the vita contemplativa are expressions of pessimism and are thus life philosophies based on pessimism. The aim of the project is to present in chronological order the different forms and functions of the vita contemplativa as well as of similar or equal lifestyles known under different names and to systematize their common characteristics and differences. For the sake of completeness, a comparison with Oriental philosophy will be made. |
