- The quality of the numerous projects established to improve the lot of the several hundred thousand children who live and work on the streets of Brazil varies greatly. However, the topic of Quality of such projects remains little discussed, and the topic of their Organisation - meaning their way towards quality - has neither been researched, nor does it receive much attention in practice and social policy. This empirical study is based on the case of a southern brazilian grass-roots project, the "Chácara dos Meninos de Quatro Pinheiros", and uses a qualitative and participatory research approach (e.g. working with a research group of former street boys who design and implement structured interviews). It aims to produce an in-depth phenography of the "Chácara", a type of organisation so far not researched in Organisational and Social Psychology, and to describe how its organisation is linked with its goals, results and quality/sustainability. It does so on the levels of both social construction and information, with a special interest in the organisation's "drivers" (motivation, values, rules etc.). The study also contains insights into other projects in the region. A discussion of the empirical findings on the basis of the existing literature on organisations is included.
This is a joint research project of the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Zurich (Prof. Dr. Heinz Gutscher) and the Institute of Work and Organisational Psychology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Prof. Dr. Theo Wehner).
