| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The project is based on the premise that differences in cultural backgrounds need not result in a clash of civilizations, but that different civilizations can enrich each other in various ways, especially if a fruitful dialogue and a willingness to understand one another exist or are, at least, aimed at. Thus the question arises: how can different civilizations communicate in a fruitful dialogue? One of the ways that helps to communicate and understand better seems to be art. But can and should art really do this? And if yes, how? Can art function as a bridge between civilizations? To examine these questions, I will first analyse the term ‘civilization’ and the different (philosophical) positions assumed in the corresponding debate. To capture the meaning of the term it will be necessary to consider cultural philosophy as well as certain aspects of sociology and ethnology. In addition, the problem of minorities within a given cultural area along with the question of the cultural features of heterogeneous societies will be dealt with. Secondly, I will analyse the question ‘What is art?’, or, more precisely, ‘What does art aim to be?’ and ‘What can or should art be?’ Therefore, the focus will not be on the aesthetic aspects of art, but on what art can achieve on a social level, individually and collectively. These questions will be clarified by examining the example of Afro-American music and its influence on the civil rights movement. Finally, I will discuss whether any artistic norms should be set, e.g., by censorship or specific sponsorship, and I will ask whether such measures are likely to prove helpful or counterproductive. |
