Title / Titel A dose-response, placebo-controlled EEG investigation of the brain activity due to psilocybin administration in normals
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Psilocybin causes a changed state of consciousness and associated brain activity changes we have previously mapped with PET (Vollenweider et al. 1997). The current project aims to extend these findings by characterizing the specifc localized electrocortical changes seen due to psilocybin administration via high-density EEG recordings. Further, we have found that psilocybin induces a state of consciousness accompanied by phasic periods of altered ego functioning as well as altered processing of visual stimuli such as the perceptually ambiguous binocular rivalry stimulus and visual motion processing. In addition to the dose-response time course analysis of EEG effects due to psilocybin, phasic periods of altered ego functioning/experiences of self and other hallmarks of the altered state elicited by psilocybin will be correlated with their accompanying specific brain activity maps as indexed by spectral power and coherency measures. In addition, gestalt processing will be probed in depth using ERPs (Event-Related Potentials) in response to gestalt vs. non-gestalt visual stimuli (Kanizsa triangles and Mooney faces. Lastly, to more fully characterize the early and late components of general visual processing we use a standard visual-3-stimulus P300 paradigm with standards, targets, and distractors.
