Title / Titel Concurrent infections with vector-borne pathogens as etiology of fatal hemolytic anemia in a cattle herd from Switzerland
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Bovine anaplasmosis is a vector-borne disease resulting in substantial economic losses in other parts of the world but so far not in northern Europe. In August 2002, a fatal disease outbreak was reported in a large dairy herd in the Swiss Canton of Grisons. Diseased animals experienced fever, anorexia, agalactia, and depression. Anemia, ectoparasite infestation, and occasionally hemoglobinuria were observed.
It was the goal of the present study to determine the role of vector-borne pathogens in the reported disease outbreak and to objectify the disease by laboratory methods. Infections with Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia and Theileria spp., and Mycoplasma wenyonii were investigated by microscopical examination of blood smears, serologically and by molecular methods.
It was found that A. marginale was the major cause of hemolytic anemia, while coinfections with other agents exacerbated the disease. We reported the first severe disease outbreak associated with concurrent infections of vector-borne pathogens in alpine Switzerland.
