| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The project aims at exploring texts written in the 1950’s and 1960’s by leading academics from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Having fled Mainland China after the Communist takeover, they became devoted teachers or scholars committing themselves to research while maintaining an important role as publicists. In a wide range of essays written in exile, they reflected on the prospects of “Chinese culture” in terms of their own deep existential concern. At the same time they criticized Maoist interpretations for choosing the wrong way to change the cultural heritage. What alternative culture would they envision? Being participants as well as researchers of the history of ideas their essays provide us with both testimony and reflective analysis of their times. Through a detailed examination of the work of Lao Siguang (1927- ) who was chosen for his dense, complex essays carrying cross-cultural significance, the thesis aims at a contextualised understanding of Laos concept of culture. |
