Completed research project

Title / Titel The role of protected values in individual and group decision making
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Our research project deals with processes of judgment and decision making. Thereby, we are connecting cognitive and social psychological approaches. Our focus lies on the influence of moral and ethics on individual and group decision making processes. A key question is why some people treat certain issues as protected areas. If an issue like environmental protection, biotechnology, human rights or health is at stake, many people reacte with moral outrage and intense engagement. Empirical studies show that people sometimes treat certain options of a decision situation as morally unacceptable and definitely reject making cost-benefit-considerations. The involved ethical values are seen as neither negotiable nor exchangeable and therefore cannot be traded against other values (e.g., money). As a consequence, they are likely to govern a decision or a negotiation. So called “protected values” or “sacred values” are an important source of decision problems and social conflicts. A reason behind this is that value conflicts are harder to resolve than conflicts of interest. But this fact has largely been neglected in research and practice. With our research project we are trying to fill this gap. Finally, one of our endeavours is linking basic research with practical applications.
